The vast majority of phone owners still buy phones from a carrier, but there's a lot more freedom and interest in no-contract and unlocked phones. This is good news for all of us because we now have more options than what you can get only in your carrier store. Some of which are quite affordable.
They can be, but there's a distinction. A no-contract phone is one that doesn't require you to sign a carrier agreement in order to buy and use it, so when the phone's paid off, it's yours. Most carriers now sell a no-contract option, either with our without a payment plan. When it's paid off, you can also ask the carrier to unlock it for you, so you can (potentially) use it with another phone network.
While most unlocked phones are also no-contract, it's common enough that one carrier will sell the phone exclusively (not other carrier store stocks it), but you're often able to buy the phone from the manufacturer as well.
The best iPhones are set for the time being, with Apple's iPhone 14 launch well behind us and this fall's rollout of new models still months away. So if you were going to pick up an iPhone, now's the perfect time with Apple's lineup set until the fall.
But which iPhone should you get Our guide to the best iPhones can help you pick out the right model, as we turn to all the testing we've done on Apple's phones to identify who should pick which version of Apple's phones. If you're weighing an iPhone 14 vs. iPhone 14 Pro decision, it's a matter of deciding whether the Pro models' more premium features are justified by their higher price.
Every premium feature Apple packs into its phones is on display with the iPhone 14 Pro Max, and the phone has the price tag to show it. While this is the most expensive iPhone, you also get the super-fast A16 Bionic processor, an improved 48MP camera and the eye-catching Dynamic Island feature that replaces the notch. Plus, the Pro Max offers an expansive 6.7-inch display with a big battery to match. That battery kept the iPhone 14 Pro Max running for more than 14 hours in our test, placing it near the top of the best phone battery life rankings.
The iPhone SE (2022) is the most budget-friendly option in the current iPhone lineup. Starting at $429 for the 64GB model, the latest SE is a veritable powerhouse that runs laps around anything else at this price point. You will not find something that performs better under $500, helping it rank among the best cheap phones (even if it came up short in our Google Pixel 6a vs. iPhone SE 2022 comparison).
In our lab, we use a light meter to ascertain display quality data, like brightness and color accuracy to help us evaluate the display of the best iPhones. Our proprietary battery test determines longevity on a charge by endlessly streaming webpages over an LTE network; we then recharge the iPhones to see how quickly they charge in 15-minute intervals.
The Google Pixel 7 is one of the best Android phones you can buy right now, offering a bunch of significant upgrades compared to its predecessor, the Google Pixel 6. The main one is the Tensor G2 chipset and Titan M2 security chip, which work together to offer better performance, new features and improved security.
That camera setup also makes the Pixel 7 one of the best camera phones, complete with a bunch of Pixel-exclusive features like Photo Unblur and the Cinematic Blur for video. Of course, the Pixel 7 does have a few negatives, particularly where battery life is concerned, and the fact Google is only offering three years of software updates. Performance could be better too with benchmarking scores that lag behind those from the Samsung Galaxy S23 and Apple iPhone 14.
We've rounded up all of this week's best iPhone deals into one easy-to-scan resource right here. Regardless of whether you're looking to upgrade to that shiny new iPhone 14 at a major carrier or lining up an unlocked device to pair with a cheap prepaid plan, you'll find all your options here. Our iPhone deals page looks to be a comprehensive guide to all the current devices and we've made sure to try and cover all different types of carriers too.
Verizon prepaid: $300 off select iPhones (opens in new tab)Verizon's awesome iPhone deals don't just stop at unlimited data options - you'll also find great prepaid savings, with a $300 discount available on most devices. Eligible devices include the iPhone 14 (opens in new tab), 14 Pro (opens in new tab), 14 Pro Max (opens in new tab), and the iPhone 13 (opens in new tab) - the latter being a particularly good buy for those on a budget. It's not every day you see this carrier offer promotions outside of its pricey unlimited data plans so this is definitely not one to miss if you're looking to cut out those pesky long contracts.
While some may have been holding out (and hoping) for a bigger upgrade with the iPhone 14 it's worth noting that the design and chip are still up there with the very best flagships for 2022. If you're eligible for an upgrade in particular, then it's definitely worth considering making the jump to this generation.
Apple iPhone 14 Pro & 14 Pro Max: save up to $600 with a trade-in at Apple (opens in new tab)Apple, again, is going to be the sole provider for iPhone deals if you're on the hunt for a shiny new unlocked Pro model. Choice-wise, it's a bit of a bummer but the official Apple Store does have its own trade-in program that you can take advantage of. Right now, the maximum saving is capped-out at $600, which isn't bad considering you don't need a pesky carrier contract to be eligible. As always, you'll need to have a fairly decent old phone to fetch your maximum rebate here but mid-range devices should be able to fetch a sizeable rebate too.
Apple iPhone 13: $20 $10 with unlimited plan at AT&T (opens in new tab)You could also consider the iPhone 13 at AT&T this week, which is available for a much-reduced price of $10 per month with an unlimited plan. Again, no trade-ins are needed here which makes this one a relatively flexible option for those who don't have a recent device ready to hand over. Worth noting with this particular deal is that it's not the best we've ever seen at AT&T, which has previously offered the device for as low as $5 per month recently.
Key improvements have also been made to the battery life and camera system. The latter is of particular note since the iPhone 12 Pro already had one of the best smartphone cameras around. Now you'll be able to enjoy a new 'cinematic mode' for better depth and Dolby Vision in video capture, plus better low light performance and several new filters which Apple is calling 'Photographic Styles'.
Apple iPhone SE 2022: free with an unlimited data plan, plus free iPad and Apple Watch at Verizon (opens in new tab)Verizon's latest deal on the iPhone SE 2022 is offering this new budget device for free with a new line on an unlimited data plan - easily its best promotion yet on the device. While this one gets top marks from us in regards to value, several more premium devices are available for free under the same terms right now (iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 12). Because of this, we'd recommend those over the humble iPhone SE 2022 right now at Verizon.
Apple iPhone SE 2022: from $7/mo at AT&T with unlimited plan at Walmart (opens in new tab)Walmart's been offering some really great discounts on the iPhone SE 2022 since launch - in some cases even cheaper than the carriers themselves. Right now, its best iPhone deal is on AT&T devices specifically, with 64GB devices being listed with a monthly price of just $7 per month. That's way cheaper than going via the carrier itself so definitely consider this one if you want a device on an unlimited plan. Note, you can also get a Verizon device for $5 per month (opens in new tab) right now, although this deal isn't quite as good as the one offered by the carrier itself.
Apple iPhone SE 2022: $429 $379.99 at Boost Mobile (opens in new tab)Sure, it's not the biggest price cut in the world, but this week's $50 discount at Boost Mobile is its best yet on the new Apple iPhone SE 2022. Valid with any data plan, you'll be saving a decent chunk here - not to mention the savings you'll be making on your monthly payments should you forgo the usual unlimited data plans at one of the bigger carriers. With some great pay-monthly and family options, Boost is one of the better prepaid carriers out there at the moment.
We've included a small selection of today's best deals on older iPhone deals just down below. Before you jump, however, know that a lot of these devices will most likely be refurbished, either by Apple itself or by a third party vendor. Therefore, be cautious before you jump in and snap one up. Read the reviews and be prepared to use the retailer warranty in case the phone isn't up to scratch.
If you're looking to save a bit of cash, the iPhone 13 essentially features the same processor (very minorly worse) and an identical screen. It's still an amazing phone for 2022 and probably the best you can buy if your budget can't stretch to $799. Now it's no longer the latest in the range, Apple has reduced its price to just $699, which ain't half bad if you get a trade-in discount on top. Note, the iPhone 12 is also still available for $599 right now, which is yet another option if you're on more of a budget.
iPhone deals aren't exactly notorious for their affordability, however, there are still a few ways to land a smaller price tag with Apple. The most obvious option is to go for this week's iPhone SE 2022 deals (opens in new tab), which, while not an older device (well, relatively speaking), currently offers the best balance of price and features. 59ce067264
