Under the colonial rule of British India, thousands of women had to hand over their children to adoption societies and more than one hundred thousand cases were considered legal. -- Mariam Ferreira • 9:07
One of the most insidious legal practices of the British Empire in India was the system of adoption. During this time, an estimated 100,000 abandoned children in British India were taken into the care of adoption societies. These societies were largely made up of Christian missionaries, who were seeking to promote Christian virtues and morality through increased adoptions. In fact, the licensing of adoption societies came under the direct control of the British Empire. In such a complex society, laws were often the only way to govern interactions. -- Mariam Ferreira • 9:24
